My journey towards healing, massage, martial arts, yoga and eastern traditions began in my teens and continues to take me around the world. I started massaging people when I was 12 and baked bread weekly. Those strong hands soon found people enjoyed being "kneaded". My professional massage career began in 1988. I had a natural curiosity about health, healing and herbal remedies and was making my own tinctures and teas throughout my early life inspired by the cupboard of herbs at my grandmother's house, reading herbal books and learning from a Cree friend. The first encounter with Yogic traditions was when I read "Autobiography of a Yogi" at age 15, introduced to me by a high school psychology teacher who also taught me guided meditation. It changed my life and introduced me to conscious evolution. An older brother was a karate Sensei, and he introduced me to Eastern disciplines and self directed meditation (Zazen). Beginning in my early twenties, through a series of serendipitous events, I had the privilege of studying with a meditation Master and Mantra Rishi, attending local and overseas meditation retreats for up to 6 weeks a year for the past 30+ years. It wasn't until I attended my first hatha yoga teacher training that I had the realization that the meditation I was practicing was actually part of the Yogic path. At the time, most mainstream yoga classes emphasized only the physical aspects (breath and postures) without connecting them to the more subtle and advanced practices (meditation). There have been many teacher trainings since my first, including the IYTA (Australia) 2 year Yoga teacher course, and the IYTA (Australia) 18 month Prenatal and Postnatal Yoga teacher training. As a perpetual and curious student, I continue to study and practice. I use my extensive Yoga study as a remedial exercise tool to assist my main career as a Massage Therapist and as self care that has kept me healthy all these years. I have gone back to the genius of the Iyengar method, which has proven to support body changes and adapt to issues.
My massage career spans 30+ years, beginning in Canada where I maintain professional membership for teaching purposes. In 1994 I opened a clinic in the Peter Lougheed Hospital in Calgary on the maternity floor. It was the first massage clinic of its' kind in Canada, committed to working with pregnant and postnatal women. Soon after opening the clinic, I began attending births as a Doula, taught Infant Massage, and traveled internationally teaching a series of courses called Mother Wellness (later becoming Mother and Baby Wellness) and continue to do so. From 1996 I also worked 7 years for Canadian Mountain Holidays in the Selkirks and Monashee mountain ranges of British Columbia (heli-hiking/heli-skiing) providing 60+ massages/week. Recently I have enjoyed doing a locum for the beautiful Maruia Hot Springs resort in NZ, and sometimes working 10 hours/day.
I have also worked directly with a wide variety of health professionals in various clinics in Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
